HMS SBDM Names New Principal

 

(May 19, 2021) The Highlands Middle School School-Based Decision-Making Council (SBDMC) unanimously selected Erika Volpenhein as principal of Highlands Middle School. She is presently serving as the assistant principal at Lloyd Memorial High School, a position she has held for four years. 

Volpenhein’s career in education began at Holmes High School where she taught English for one year. Additionally, she taught English six years at Lloyd Memorial High School before advancing to her current position of assistant principal.

Volpenhein earned bachelor’s degrees in English Literature and German Studies at Fairfield University, and a master’s degree in Education as well as a Rank I in Educational Leadership at Northern Kentucky University.

HMS SBDM council member and teacher Karen Kampschmidt said, “We are excited to welcome Erika Volpenhein to Highlands Middle School. As a council, we were impressed with her strong leadership skills and high expectations. She will be a visionary leader for our school, and we feel confident that she will create a culture where our exceptional teachers and students can thrive.”

"I am humbled and honored to have been chosen to represent the students, teachers, and families of the Fort Thomas community at HMS,” said Volpenhein.  “I look forward to building upon a tradition of excellence, fostering a culture of collaboration and positivity, and setting the bar even higher to ensure the success and preparedness of our students.  This is exciting work, and I can't wait to begin."

Superintendent Karen Cheser stated, "It is a pleasure to welcome Erika Volpenhein to Fort Thomas Independent Schools. Her energy, vision, and experience strongly met the criteria Highlands Middle School was looking for in a new principal. We know she will lead the school well in continuing their journey towards ensuring high levels of academic excellence and building our Portrait of a Graduate skills.”

Volpenhein and her husband Sam reside in Crestview Hills with their two daughters, Ada and Joni.  In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, practicing yoga, and hiking.

Volpenhein will begin serving as principal on July 1, 2021.
